UNIT SUBSTATION RETIREMENTS

MasTec Professional Services engineered more than 100 miles of substation retirement and feeder upgrades for a large Northeastern U.S. utility, delivering modernized infrastructure and improved system reliability.

Our scope included complete overhead and underground design services—reconductoring, pole replacements, transformer upgrades, and updated protection schemes with new or reprogrammed devices. We also engineered new aerial and underground feeder routes to support higher-voltage conversions.

Designs addressed the needs of multiple commercial customers and included civil work for new duct banks, underground installations, and safe facility abandonment.

BATTERY ENERGY STORAGE SYSTEM EPC DELIVERY

MasTec Professional Services delivered full EPC services for a 65 MW / 260 MWh battery energy storage facility in rural Georgia, supporting regional transmission needs and future decarbonization goals. Our scope included complete civil, structural, electrical, and fire-water design; procurement of all major equipment; and installation of battery containers, inverters, transformers, and supporting systems.

Despite extended equipment lead times, labor shortages, and required utility relocations, the project was completed safely and efficiently. We maintained the schedule by supplementing crews and collaborating closely with the utility to streamline overhead line relocation.

The project demonstrates MasTec Professional Services’ ability to execute complex energy storage infrastructure with integrated EPC expertise and problem-solving excellence.

SYSTEM REDUNDANCY & REINFORCEMENT

MasTec Professional Services provided full engineering and construction support for a 1.2-mile, 12-inch steel storm-hardening and system-reinforcement pipeline between two barrier islands. Services included route analysis, field surveys, HDD and direct-bury design, environmental and state permitting, cathodic protection design, and complete as-built documentation.

The project required tight-corridor work, maintaining service to nearby commercial customers, and executing a ~3,500-foot HDD reaching depths over 150 feet beneath a navigable waterway.

Our teams completed detailed geotechnical, hydrographic, and environmental assessments; secured all required permits; and delivered comprehensive construction drawings. We remained onsite to document welds, fittings, and utility crossings, ensuring accurate final as-builts and weld maps.

MasTec Professional Services has provided external corrosion direct assessment services for more than 15 years across approximately 125 miles of pipeline in Westchester, the Bronx, Queens, and Manhattan. Our scope includes comprehensive ACVG, DCVG, current attenuation, and close-interval surveys, supported by sub-meter GPS data collected at five-foot intervals, at all appurtenances, and at identified anomalies.

Survey results are analyzed to pinpoint potential pipeline integrity concerns and prioritize findings in alignment with the operator’s integrity management plan. MPS also identifies excavation locations to confirm indications and support remediation efforts. All data is delivered in both graphical and electronic formats to support engineering review and long-term asset integrity planning.

MasTec Professional Services delivered a complete cathodic protection engineering program for parallel 13-mile long high-pressure fluid-filled feeders between two substations. Our work included system evaluation, design, permitting, installation, and commissioning, along with assessment of oil tanks, low-pressure supply piping, and adjacent high-pressure feeder lines.

Our team performed electrical isolation inspections, corrosion assessments, and wall-thickness measurements, and conducted field testing along the route to evaluate existing cathodic protection performance and identify external stray AC and DC electrical influences. Findings, recommendations, and an action plan were provided in a comprehensive report.

MPS then designed and permitted a new cathodic protection system—ground beds, rectifiers, cut-out boxes, and isolation devices—and commissioned the installation with close-interval and DCVG surveys to verify system effectiveness.
